The Role:
The Investment Management department of Mackenzie Investments is seeking a Director, Investment Research to build and run the data, quantitative and AI capabilities that support our boutique investment teams. Working closely with the AI platform lead, you will own the delivery and day-to-day reliability of the platform that portfolio managers and analysts rely on - the enterprise data hub, the MCP integration layer, AI agents and the cloud infrastructure behind them - and help shape its strategy and roadmap. You will also build and oversee the quantitative models, risk reports and performance attribution that inform portfolio decisions.
This is a hands-on leadership role at the intersection of investment research, data engineering and applied AI. You will work directly with portfolio managers and analysts across boutiques, and with enterprise technology, risk and vendor partners.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Work closely with the AI lead to shape and deliver the data and AI strategy and roadmap for Mackenzie’s boutique investment teams, representing the teams’ priorities and communicating plans and trade-offs to senior leaders.
- Own the delivery and reliability of the data hub, MCP layer, AI agents and the infrastructure behind them
- Build and oversee the quantitative models, risk reports and performance attribution that support portfolio decisions
- Maintain and enhance the infrastructure layer needed for all investment management workflows
- Manage data vendors and contracts to secure the right datasets for the teams
- Serve as the trusted AI and data partner to portfolio managers, analysts and technology partners
- Deliver ad hoc research and portfolio-related analysis as needed.
Minimum requirements for this role include:
- University degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Finance, or Science
- A minimum of 5+ years of relevant work experience
- Proven record of delivering enterprise data platforms or AI solutions into production for investment professionals, or in a similar domain
- Strong quantitative foundation, with hands-on experience building and productionizing quantitative models
- Working knowledge of risk reporting and performance attribution, and of how portfolio managers use them in investment decisions
- Technical depth across cloud architecture (AWS or similar), data engineering, APIs, Python and SQL, enough to guide design decisions and review the team's work
- Working knowledge of large language models, AI agents and MCP or similar integration patterns, with sound judgment on security, governance and responsible AI use
- Ability to prioritize competing demands across investment teams and communicate effectively with senior leaders and technical teams
- Strong interest in capital markets
Additional skill considerations
- Minor, Certificate, or Master’s degree in Business, Economics or Finance, or CFA designation would be an asset
- Exceptional analytical, research and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to working in a team context.
The expected annual base salary range for this role is $145,000 - $175,000 which is determined based on skills, knowledge and experience and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for annual short-term incentive, health and well-being benefits, retirement and savings plan, paid time off and career development.
