Director, Accounting & Finance
Toronto, ON (Hybrid – Tuesdays and Thursdays in Toronto office)
$125,000–$150,000 base salary, plus benefits and RRSP matching
Our client is an established organization with a small Canadian team and long-tenured employees. They are looking for a Director, Accounting & Finance to take ownership of full-cycle accounting and financial reporting. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will supervise one direct report and work closely with finance colleagues across the broader organization.
This is a hands-on role for a CPA who enjoys preparing the numbers and explaining them to leadership. You will manage the monthly close, oversee payroll and help the team transition to Workday Financial and its integration with ADP. The organization is targeting a January 2027 start. They offer very good work/life balance, 12 sick days and an office closure between Christmas and New Year’s. Some weeks you will only be expected to go into the office one day per week, but mostly it will be two days. This is a very hands-on Director role, so you should be prepared to handle bank reconciliations, journal entries, HST filing and more.
Responsibilities
- Manage the monthly and year-end close, including journal entries, general ledger reconciliations and the preparation of financial statements. Prepare monthly management reports and explain variances against budget.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, manage day-to-day banking and complete bank reconciliations.
- Record investment transactions, reconcile holdings to investment statements and prepare monthly investment reports. Review distribution approvals and complete the related accounting and reconciliations.
- Oversee Ontario payroll through ADP. Review and approve each pay run, verify salary changes and ensure payroll information flows accurately between Workday and ADP.
- Coordinate the annual audit, prepare working papers and financial schedules, and respond to questions from external auditors.
- Prepare monthly GST/HST returns and coordinate withholding tax reporting, annual information returns and other regulatory filings with external advisers.
- Review accounting policies, approval procedures and the segregation of duties. Help improve processes as the team transitions to new systems.
- Supervise and develop one direct report whose current focus is accounts receivable. Help identify opportunities for that role to take on more financial analysis over time.
Requirements
- Canadian CPA designation and a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related field.
- At least eight years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on responsibility for full-cycle accounting, bank reconciliations and monthly financial reporting.
- Preference will be given to individuals with Workday and ADP experience.
- Strong understanding of audit preparation, internal controls and payroll oversight.
- Advanced EXCEL skills and the ability to investigate discrepancies, explain findings and manage competing deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment when handling confidential information and the ability to guide a direct report while managing your own accounting work.
