IMMEDIATE INTERIM OPPORTUNITY
Interim Vice President, Finance, Technology & Business Operations
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer
Duration: 3 to 6 months
Location: Greater Toronto Area
Hybrid Working
Our client is a respected national not-for-profit organization with a complex operating model, multiple stakeholders and a strong mission-driven culture. The organization works collaboratively with regional partners and relies on effective financial stewardship, technology, data, risk management and business operations to deliver on its mandate.
The Opportunity
The organization is seeking an experienced interim executive to provide transitional leadership following an unexpected leave. This is a three-to-six-month assignment combining hands-on operational oversight with strategic advice and support to the CEO.
The Interim Vice President will inherit a capable, well-performing team across finance and technology. The priority is not to initiate unnecessary change, but to provide stability, sound judgment and thoughtful leadership through a delicate period of transition. The successful interim will maintain operational continuity, coach and support the team, and ensure that the CEO and executive leadership have the financial information, analytics and technology advice required for effective decision-making.
The portfolio includes responsibility for finance and technology/information services, with broader involvement in business operations, risk and organizational planning.
Transitional and Operational Leadership
- Provide steady, visible and reassuring leadership during a sensitive period of transition.
- Assume day-to-day executive accountability for finance, technology and related business operations.
- Maintain momentum on existing priorities while ensuring continuity of critical services, reporting and controls.
- Quickly assess emerging issues and determine which matters require immediate attention, which should continue as planned and which should be deferred.
- Establish an effective working relationship with the CEO and serve as a trusted, pragmatic strategic adviser.
- Support clear communication and collaboration across the executive team and broader organization.
Finance, Analytics and Executive Decision Support
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, cash management, financial reporting, audit readiness and core financial operations.
- Ensure the continued integrity of financial systems, internal controls and risk-management practices.
- Provide the CEO, executive team and Board committees with timely, relevant and decision-oriented financial analysis.
- Strengthen the quality of management information by moving reporting beyond historical results toward clearer analysis of trends, risks, opportunities and forward-looking implications.
- Improve the use of data, dashboards and analytics to support program, operational and resource-allocation decisions.
- Ensure leaders receive appropriate support in developing and monitoring departmental and program budgets.
- Maintain oversight of funder reporting, donor and partnership funds, charitable reporting requirements and other sector-specific financial obligations.
The underlying role is responsible for budgeting, financial analysis, monthly reporting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, cash management, donor receipting, audit coordination and charitable-sector reporting.
Technology, AI and Cybersecurity
- Provide executive oversight of the technology function and ensure that systems and services remain reliable, secure and aligned with organizational priorities.
- Review the organization’s technology roadmap and identify immediate risks, dependencies and opportunities.
- Help the CEO and executive team evaluate the responsible use of artificial intelligence, including where AI can improve productivity, analysis and service delivery while appropriately managing privacy, security and reputational risk.
- Assess the organization’s cybersecurity and data-privacy posture, ensuring that material vulnerabilities and required actions are clearly understood by leadership.
- Support the organization in prioritizing technology investments based on operational value, risk and available resources.
- Ensure major technology initiatives are appropriately governed and positioned to deliver reliable performance and a positive user experience.
- Strengthen the connection between finance, technology and organizational data so that leadership receives more integrated and actionable insights.
Team Leadership and Coaching
- Lead a small, established team across finance and technology with empathy, clarity and consistency.
- Preserve the strengths of a well-performing team while providing the direction and executive access needed during the transition.
- Coach team members, clarify priorities and reinforce accountability without creating disruption or unnecessary organizational change.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen capability, cross-functional collaboration and succession coverage.
- Create an environment in which team members feel supported, informed and confident in raising concerns or escalating risks.
- Provide the CEO with an objective assessment of team capacity, operating pressures and longer-term organizational needs.
Risk, Governance and Business Operations
- Maintain effective financial, technology, privacy, legal and operational risk-management practices.
- Ensure that material risks are identified, evaluated, documented and communicated to the CEO and the appropriate Board committee.
- Support risk-register updates, insurance considerations, crisis-management readiness and business-continuity planning.
- Ensure contracts and material commitments receive appropriate financial, operational and legal review.
- Contribute to operational planning and help align organizational priorities, resources and budgets.
- Prepare clear transition documentation and recommendations to support the eventual return or onboarding of permanent leadership.
Ideal Candidate Profile

- Experience improving management reporting, data analytics, business intelligence and organizational performance insights.
- Meaningful exposure to cybersecurity, data privacy, technology governance and digital transformation.
- A practical understanding of artificial intelligence and the governance considerations associated with its responsible organizational use.
- Experience advising a CEO and presenting complex financial, operational and technology matters to executive teams and Board committees.
