Job Description:
Tableau and Power BI SME
Industry: Financial Services
Location: Toronto, ON
Hybrid: 1 day a week, one additional day per month
Duration of Contract/Perm: 12 Month contract with potential to extend
Hours/week: 37.5 per week
Rate Range: $63-$68/hr T4
Start date: November 2026
Job Overview
Apex Systems is seeking a Senior Product Owner (Product SME) to join a leading financial services organization in Toronto. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Analytics Platforms, this role leads the migration from Tableau to Power BI and Microsoft Fabric as part of a multi-year program (approximately 2 years) to consolidate enterprise reporting and analytics onto Power BI, Fabric and Databricks and retire Tableau. The delivery team, including developers, QA, operations and a Scrum Master, is already in place. Business teams convert their own dashboards under a federated model, so this role sets the direction, standards and guidance that help them succeed. This is a leadership, consultative and coordination role rather than a development role, so strong migration, stakeholder and executive communication experience is essential, but hands-on dashboard development is not expected. The ability to take ownership and inspire teams and vendors to keep moving forward is critical.
Responsibilities
Product Ownership and Migration Strategy
- Own the migration strategy, product backlog, roadmap and requirements for the Tableau, Power BI and Fabric workstreams
- Assess the Tableau estate (sites, users, workbooks, data sources and connection types), prioritize migrations based on business value, risk and readiness, and build the migration plan
- Identify feature gaps between Tableau and Power BI and recommend practical approaches to address them
- Evaluate migration automation options, including Microsoft's Fabric Migration Toolkit, AI-assisted conversion approaches and vendor solutions, and provide recommendations
- Establish standards, best practices and migration guidance for business teams performing their own conversions
Platform Readiness, Governance and Security
- Define the requirements to scale Power BI and Fabric for incoming Tableau users, workloads and data connections, including Fabric capacity planning, the transition from Power BI Premium to Fabric, and data gateway expansion
- Translate how data sources are created and provisioned in Tableau into equivalent configuration requirements in Power BI and Fabric
- Ensure migrated content meets governance and security standards, including access controls, row level security, sensitivity labelling and Microsoft Purview related requirements, working with architecture, information security and data governance partners
Business Enablement and Stakeholder Leadership
- Act as the primary product contact for business teams and Tableau site owners throughout their migration journey
- Lead migration communications, run recurring forums, and maintain guidance, FAQs and milestones on Confluence
- Coordinate training and onboarding so users are productive in Power BI and Fabric
- Act as the connector between business teams, platform engineering, architecture, information security, data governance, program management and vendors including Microsoft and Databricks, and drive conversations with third-party vendors to track and coordinate migration
Tracking, Reporting and Decommissioning
- Maintain a migration tracker showing progress by team, and raise risks, issues, dependencies and escalations early
- Report progress, risks and decisions to program leadership and executive stakeholders
- Coordinate the readiness activities required to decommission Tableau once migrations are complete
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience with enterprise BI and analytics platforms
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with both Tableau and Power BI
- Experience supporting or leading an enterprise-scale Tableau to Power BI migration
- Experience in a Product Owner, Product SME or similar stakeholder-facing role on large BI, analytics or data modernization initiatives
- Experience working in a regulated industry such as banking or insurance
- Strong understanding of Tableau Server architecture (sites, projects, data sources, extracts, connectivity) and Power BI Service (workspaces, capacities, gateways, semantic models, deployment pipelines, security)
- Working experience with Microsoft Fabric, including Fabric capacity and how Power BI operates within it
- Solid knowledge of data modelling, DAX, and on-premises and cloud data source connectivity
- Working knowledge of BI governance and security controls such as row level security, sensitivity labels and Microsoft Purview
- Strong backlog management, requirements definition and Agile delivery skills, using tools such as Jira and Confluence
- Excellent executive-level communication, presentation and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence without direct authority and build consensus across competing priorities
- Strong ownership mindset, with the ability to work independently, drive a process forward and inspire teams to move forward
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Candidates who have previously led a similar Tableau to Power BI migration
- Familiarity with migration automation tools or approaches such as the Fabric Migration Toolkit or AI-assisted conversion
- Databricks exposure, particularly how Power BI connects to Databricks and inherits Unity Catalog security
- Cloud data platform experience (Azure preferred)
- Financial services background
- Governance experience and ServiceNow familiarity
- Consulting background
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, Engineering or a related field
- Certifications such as Microsoft Fabric Analytics Engineer, Power BI Data Analyst, Tableau, CSPO, PMP or SAFe
