Job Description:
Business Data Analyst
Industry: Financial Services
Location: Toronto. Hybrid: 2 to 3 days a week in office (days are flexible)
Duration of Contract/Perm: 6 to 12 month contract (6 month and 12 month openings available)
Hours/week: 37.5 per week
Start date: December 2026
Job Overview
Apex Systems is seeking a Business Data Analyst to join a leading financial services organization in Toronto. This role sits within a business process analytics team in a banking line of business and supports business partners by reporting on the business processes and projects that drive regulatory compliance. A typical example is a front-line process for obtaining customer signatures: was it done properly and on time, and how should any issue be remediated. The analyst works directly with the groups carrying out these processes, learns how each process works, determines what reporting they need, analyzes the data, and builds the reports and dashboards that give stakeholders and leadership clear insight. The work is roughly half business-facing and half technical, weighted differently across the project: more business-facing at the start while requirements and processes are understood, then deeper analysis and reporting, then business-facing again as reports are reviewed and refined through feedback cycles. This is a hands-on analytics role rather than a BI developer role, with data preparation done in SAS and SQL and Power BI used for visualization and storytelling with data. Strong communication and a curious mindset are the most important soft skills for this role.
Responsibilities
Business Process Understanding and Requirements
- Work directly with the business groups that carry out regulated processes to understand how each process works, including processes that are new to you
- Gather and document requirements and determine what reporting or analysis stakeholders actually need
- Iterate with business teams through feedback cycles once initial reports are delivered, refining the reporting based on what is and is not working
Data Analysis
- Pull together large datasets stored primarily in a SQL Server environment, using SQL and SAS for querying, manipulation and analysis
- Perform exploratory analysis on large, messy and sometimes unstructured data to identify trends, anomalies and issues
- Analyze whether business processes are being completed correctly and on time, and help identify issues and remediation opportunities
- Apply analytics-focused Python, such as Pandas and NumPy, alongside SAS and SQL where it suits the analysis
Reporting, Visualization and Storytelling
- Build reports and dashboards in Power BI on data prepared upfront in SAS and SQL, using basic DAX and calculations
- Turn analysis into clear insights and recommendations that make sense to business stakeholders and leadership
- Question data anomalies and tell the story behind the numbers
Qualifications
- 3+ years of relevant experience in data or business analytics
- Strong SQL skills for querying, manipulating and analyzing large datasets
- Hands-on analytics or programming experience with SAS and/or Python; strong analytics-focused Python experience, particularly Pandas and NumPy, can offset lighter SAS experience
- Strong exploratory data analysis skills, including pulling together large datasets, working through messy or complex data, identifying trends or issues, and developing meaningful insights
- Business-facing requirements gathering experience, with the ability to enter an unfamiliar business area, understand the underlying process or problem, and determine what reporting or analysis stakeholders need
- Power BI experience creating reports and visualizations and presenting insights to stakeholders; a working understanding of basic DAX and calculations is needed, but deep Power BI development experience is not required
- Data storytelling and presentation skills, with the ability to turn analysis into information that makes sense to business stakeholders and leadership
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to iterate on reporting and analytics based on business feedback
- Curious, analytical mindset and comfort independently learning new business processes and working through ambiguous problems
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Power Apps
- Experience supporting business process analytics, such as analyzing whether processes are being completed correctly and on time and identifying potential issues or remediation opportunities
- Experience working in a regulatory or compliance-oriented environment, or developing reporting that supports regulatory business processes
- Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Finance, Statistics, Quantitative Methods, Math, Computer Science, Marketing or a similar field
