Position Overview
Our client is a substantive multi-generational Canadian family office with a long-standing heritage of operational excellence, growth-oriented stewardship and trusted relationships. With investments spanning private equity, infrastructure and real estate, and sports and media, the organization has a diversified investment portfolio and a strong track record of long-term value creation. Currently, they are looking to grow their investment manager platform and are seeking a Director of Investments to lead their third-party managed fund.
Reporting to the CFO, the Director of Investments will lead strategy development, be responsible for alignment and governance of the investment strategy, and oversee the platform of external managers and advisors. The role will lead research and due diligence, translating investment insights into clear, well-supported recommendations for the Investment Committee’s review and decision.
The chosen candidate will have deep multi-asset investment expertise, deep external manager management expertise, sound judgment and strong communication skills. The ability to operate effectively within a collaborative investment environment where decision-making is shared rather than centralized with a single decision-maker is a key asset for success in this role.
This is a rare opportunity to take a leadership role in shaping the investment strategy of a highly respected, multi-generational investment platform at an important stage of growth. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, with the breadth and influence to help shape the portfolio and investment approach for the years ahead.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead the development and ongoing evolution of the third-party managed funds investment strategy, anchored in a clearly defined investment policy statement (IPS) that reflects the company’s objectives, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, and constraints.
- Lead the selection of, and due diligence on, external investment managers and advisory partners, bringing well-researched, well-supported recommendations to the Investment Committee.
- Assess how outsourced providers execute against the IPS on an ongoing basis, evaluating relationship coverage, investment philosophy and process, technology and reporting, risk management practices, platform strength and safety, and fees.
- Build and maintain consolidated portfolio reporting, translating manager- and provider-level activity into clear, regular updates.
- Serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for advisors, managers, and other providers, coordinating activity across the investment platform.
- Bring an independent, well-formed point of view on markets, managers, and providers, and be prepared to test and defend that view in conversation with the family and with outside partners.
- Evaluate direct investment opportunities as they arise, assessing fit and risk/return alongside the core portfolio, and bring recommendations forward with clear rationale.
- Advise the Investment Committee on the structure of its external relationships - including how many providers to engage, how mandates should be designed and compared, and which sleeves are best delegated to specialist providers versus centrally advised.
Desired Qualifications
- 10–15 years of investment experience, with a demonstrated track record managing complex, multi-asset portfolios and external manager management.
- Strong grounding in the purpose, components, and governance of an investment policy statement.
- Direct experience selecting, negotiating with, and overseeing external investment managers, advisors, or outsourced-CIO providers.
- Familiarity with strategic asset allocation frameworks and long-term capital market assumptions.
- Prior experience in a family office, private wealth, or other principal-driven environment is strongly preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex portfolio and market information into clear, decision-ready guidance for non-investment-professional stakeholders.
Please note that at present, legal eligibility to work in Canada is a prerequisite for this role.
