People & Culture Business Partner (12-Month Contract)
Toronto, ON (Hybrid, 2 days in office) · 12-month contract with potential to hire on · Compensation starting at $85,000
You’re the HR professional leaders call when things get complicated, and you actually enjoy that. You can hold your ground on what’s right while finding a creative path to get there. If that sounds like you, read on.
What you’ll do
This is a hands-on individual contributor role with no direct reports. You’ll do the work yourself, from the first interview to the exit conversation.
Organizational change, talent and culture
- Help design and roll out a performance management framework, then coach leaders and employees on how it works and why it matters.
- Lead initiatives that move the firm’s IDEA strategy from plan to action.
- Drive employee recognition and engagement projects using survey results and workforce data.
- Build practical guides, communications, and learning sessions that help people adopt change.
- Partner closely with your client group’s Director of Performance Management, working out together where each role starts and ends.
- Support the Workday rollout, especially the Recruiting and Talent modules (goal setting, mid-year and year-end reviews).
Recruitment and onboarding
- Own full-cycle hiring for your client group: role intake, sourcing, assessment, selection, offers, and onboarding.
Employee relations
- Coach managers through performance issues, PIPs, disciplinary action, accommodations, investigations, and terminations.
- Interpret policy and apply employment standards and human rights legislation across multiple provinces.
What you bring
- About 5 years of progressive HR experience as a Business Partner or senior generalist.
- Hands-on employee relations experience, including investigations, performance management, and terminations.
- Working knowledge of Canadian employment standards, human rights, privacy, and accessibility legislation across more than one province.
- Full-cycle recruitment experience.
- CHRP, CHRL, or CRHA designation, or well on your way to one.
- Excellent communication skills. You can explain, persuade, and “sell” a new program to a skeptical audience.
Nice to have
- Learning & development or training delivery experience. This is a real differentiator for this role.
- Experience leading parts of an organizational change, M&A integration, or program rollout.
- Workday experience, especially Recruiting, Talent, or Compensation modules, or a Workday go-live.
- French and English bilingualism.
- Experience in professional services, consulting, or with IDEA initiatives.
- Comfort using AI and digital tools to improve HR processes.
- Change management training or certification.
You’ll thrive here if you…
- Are a partner, not a policy enforcer. You know the law is the law, but you also know there’s rarely only one way to get there. You listen to what the business needs and find the middle ground.
- Coach and influence experts. Your clients are brilliant in their fields. You’re confident enough to guide them on the people side, and patient enough to bring them along.
- Bounce back. A proposal gets pushback today, and you show up tomorrow with a fresh angle. Resilience is essential here.
- Genuinely love HR. You light up talking about the work, and it shows.
- Like rolling up your sleeves. You’re happy doing everything yourself in a small team, rather than looking for people to delegate to.
- Are curious and versatile. You’ve touched many parts of HR and want to grow further into talent, learning, and change.
What’s in it for you: a collaborative, entrepreneurial culture; colleagues across Canada and many practice areas; the chance to help build the People & Culture function; and a hybrid workplace.
