Aplin has partnered with an established engineering consulting firm to recruit a Senior Electrical / Transportation Engineer specializing in highway illumination, traffic signals, and transportation electrical infrastructure.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Professional Engineer to take a leadership role in the design and delivery of complex transportation infrastructure projects, including Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) capital works and municipal roadway improvements.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading electrical engineering design, preparing and sealing detailed design contract packages, and ensuring compliance with applicable provincial and municipal standards.
Candidates currently qualified under the MTO Registry, Appraisal and Qualification System (RAQS), or possessing the experience and credentials necessary to obtain qualification in relevant categories, will be given strong consideration.
Key Responsibilities
Highway and Underpass Illumination Design

- Design the replacement, rehabilitation, and modernization of high-mast lighting systems.
- Develop structural underpass lighting designs for provincial highway infrastructure.
- Design and coordinate municipal illumination reinstatements associated with provincial highway construction and rehabilitation projects.
- Incorporate specialized lighting systems, including Transport Canada-compliant navigation lighting for waterway bridges, where required.
Permanent and Temporary Traffic Signals
- Lead the design of permanent traffic signal installations, signal modernization, and intersection improvements at MTO ramp terminals and municipal connecting roads.
- Develop traffic signal solutions for multi-use pathways, bicycle crossings, and accessible transportation infrastructure in compliance with AODA requirements.
- Design temporary traffic signal systems for construction staging, including portable temporary traffic signals (PTTS) and span-wire installations.
- Support traffic signal designs associated with bridge rehabilitation, highway interchange construction, and temporary lane closures.
- Design the replacement of long-term temporary signals with permanent installations, including associated illumination requirements.
Power Distribution, Protection and Electrical Studies
- Design roadside Power Supply Cabinets (PSC) and Highway Distribution Assemblies (DA) supporting freeway illumination and traffic signal infrastructure.
- Coordinate electrical servicing requirements with local distribution companies and utility providers.
- Prepare and review electrical power system studies, including arc flash analyses, short-circuit assessments, and voltage-drop calculations.
- Ensure electrical designs comply with applicable safety codes, technical specifications, and project requirements.
Project Leadership and Technical Delivery
- Lead the preparation, technical review, and sealing of electrical engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Coordinate with transportation, civil, structural, and municipal engineering teams to deliver integrated infrastructure solutions.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to intermediate and junior engineering professionals.
- Liaise with MTO, municipalities, utility providers, and other project stakeholders throughout the design process.
- Maintain responsibility for design quality, technical compliance, project schedules, and engineering deliverables.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
- Minimum 7 years of transportation electrical engineering design experience.
- At least 5 years of direct experience preparing detailed electrical engineering design contract packages for MTO capital projects.
- Demonstrated expertise in highway illumination, traffic signal design, and electrical infrastructure associated with provincial and municipal transportation projects.
- Strong working knowledge of MTO Electrical Engineering Design Manuals, Ontario Traffic Manual, Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications (OPSS), Ontario Provincial Standard Drawings (OPSD), and Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC / CSA C22.1).
- Proficiency with relevant engineering design software, including AutoCAD, AutoLUX, AGi32, and MicroStation.
- Experience coordinating with electrical utilities and preparing or reviewing power distribution and protection studies.
- MTO RAQS qualification in relevant electrical engineering categories, or demonstrated eligibility to obtain qualification, is a significant asset.
- Strong technical leadership, communication, project coordination, and problem-solving skills.
