Smaller Agency is a Toronto brand strategy, identity and packaging studio. We work with ambitious consumer brands to find the idea, build the visual system and bring it to life.
We’re looking for a designer with strong conceptual thinking and the craft to carry an idea through to finished work. Brand identity and packaging are at the centre of the role, with opportunities to extend that work into websites, campaigns and launch materials.
You’ll work directly with founder Noah Barlow and a small team of creative collaborators. Your perspective will help shape the work from the beginning.
What you’ll work on
- Develop creative directions from strategy and design briefs.
- Design brand identities, including logos, typography, colour systems and guidelines.
- Create packaging concepts and extend approved designs across products, formats and SKUs.
- Carry brand systems into digital layouts, presentations, social content and launch assets.
- Prepare clear presentations that explain the thinking behind your work.
- Refine concepts through feedback and prepare accurate final files for production or handoff.
What we’re looking for
You have a portfolio that shows strong ideas, considered typography and attention to detail. You can build a distinctive identity and make it work across different applications.
You’re comfortable taking ownership of a brief, sharing work in progress and asking useful questions. You can explain your choices, respond thoughtfully to feedback and keep projects moving.
You should bring:
- Experience designing brand identities and packaging.
- Strong skills in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop, with working knowledge of Figma.
- An understanding of print production, dielines and artwork preparation.
- The ability to organise files and build systems that others can use.
- Clear communication and reliable delivery across multiple projects.
Experience with food, beverage, wellness or other consumer brands is especially relevant. Illustration, motion or digital design skills are welcome additions.
Working with Smaller
We’re a small, senior-led studio. You’ll have direct access to the people making decisions, meaningful input into the creative and responsibility for seeing your work through.
The role suits someone who enjoys both developing the idea and getting the details right, from an early identity exploration to the final packaging file.
Engagement: Freelance with option for full-time available
