Job Title: VB.NET Developer (Mid / Senior)
Job Type: Contract (6 Months, with strong potential for extension)
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid – 3 days/week on-site, 2 days remote)
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced VB.NET Developer for a 6-month contract role in Toronto, ON. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, enhancing, and optimizing mission-critical enterprise applications built on VB.NET, ASP.NET, and SQL Server.
You will work closely with cross-functional project teams, business analysts, and solution architects to troubleshoot issues, deliver change requests, and support ongoing migration and modernization initiatives moving legacy modules toward modern .NET Core / C# patterns.
Key Responsibilities
- Application Development & Maintenance: Maintain, debug, and develop new features for existing enterprise desktop (WinForms) and web (ASP.NET Web Forms / MVC) applications written in VB.NET.
- Database Programming & Tuning: Write, optimize, and maintain complex SQL Server queries, stored procedures, views, triggers, and relational schemas to ensure database integrity and performance.
- Modernization & Refactoring: Support architectural roadmaps by refactoring legacy VB.NET modules, upgrading older .NET framework targets, and converting components into C# and modern RESTful APIs where required.
- Integrations & Web Services: Build, maintain, and consume SOAP (WCF/ASMX) and RESTful Web APIs to enable communication across distributed business platforms.
- Testing & Production Support: Conduct unit testing, assist QA with integration and UAT cycles, investigate L3 support issues, and perform root-cause analysis on production defects.
- CI/CD & Documentation: Participate in sprint planning, maintain code changes using Git or Azure DevOps, and document technical specifications, runbooks, and interface mappings.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on software development experience with the Microsoft .NET ecosystem.
- Core Language: Strong expertise in VB.NET (both procedural and object-oriented paradigms).
- Frameworks & UI: Proven track record working with ASP.NET (Web Forms / MVC), WinForms, and .NET Framework 4.x.
- Database & Data Access: Extensive experience with MS SQL Server, T-SQL scripting, stored procedure optimization, and ORM/data access layers (ADO.NET, Entity Framework, LINQ).
- Web Services: Practical experience developing and consuming WCF, ASMX Web Services, and RESTful APIs.
- Version Control: Proficiency with Git, Azure DevOps (TFS/VSTS), and Agile/Scrum delivery cadences.
- Work Arrangement: Willingness and eligibility to work on-site 3 days per week at our Toronto office.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience converting or modernizing legacy VB.NET codebases to C# / .NET Core / .NET 6+.
- Exposure to front-end libraries (JavaScript, jQuery, HTML5, CSS3).
- Familiarity with Microsoft Azure cloud hosting, App Services, or SQL Azure.
- Prior experience in financial services, banking, insurance, or logistics sectors within the Canadian market.
