Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario (SCAGO)
Location: GTA, London, Windsor, Hamildont, Ottawa, Thunderbay events
Time commitment: 1–2 events per month, 3–5 hours per event
About SCAGO
The Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario is a charitable patient organization that supports children, youth, adults and families living with sickle cell disease across Ontario. We provide peer support, education, advocacy and community programming, and we work to raise awareness of sickle cell disease.
About the Role
We’re looking for a volunteer photographer to help us capture the moments that show who we are: community gatherings, blood drives, youth workshops, awareness events and more. Your photos will help us share our community’s stories, promote our programs, and build awareness of sickle cell disease through our website, social media, newsletters and reports.
Responsibilities
- Photograph SCAGO events, programs and activities, both candid moments and key highlights (speakers, panels, group photos)
- Work with the Communication Coordinator before each event to understand photo needs and priorities
- Follow SCAGO’s photo consent process: only photograph people who have consented, and respect anyone who does not wish to be photographed
- Take extra care when photographing children, youth and patients, following SCAGO’s privacy guidelines
- Do basic editing (cropping, colour correction) and select the best images
- Deliver organized, high-quality photos within 1-2 weeks of each event
- Optional: capture short video clips for social media
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in event or portrait photography (a portfolio or sample photos is required)
- Your own camera equipment (a DSLR or mirrorless camera is preferred; a high-quality smartphone may be considered)
- Basic photo editing skills (e.g., Lightroom, Photoshop, Snapseed)
- A respectful, discreet approach, and comfort working in community and health-related settings
- Reliability and good communication
- An interest in health equity, community advocacy, or sickle cell awareness is an asset
What You’ll Gain
- Photo credit on SCAGO’s platforms and materials
- Portfolio-building experience with a respected provincial charity
- Volunteer hours and a reference letter on request
- The chance to make a real difference in the sickle cell community
